After all, you're only going to mess it up again in a matter of hours, so why bother. Making a bed has in fact become one of those chores that few people actually bother with, but a made bed has a dramatic impact on the way a room looks and feels. Find out a few simple steps to make a bed, and make your room appear less cluttered and chaotic.

1. Gather Supplies
Choose bed linens that you find comfortable and attractive. If you like the way a valance makes your room look, then by all means grab your favourite. If you prefer a more minimalist approach, that's fine too. A bed that is made, however simply, is still a major improvement over a mass of pillows.

2. Remove Used Linens
Take off the used linens and put them in the wash. Shake out any mattress pads, pillow protectors, and comforters that don't need to be washed. If you use a valance and it needs to be washed, remove and replace it.

3. Put the Bottom Sheet On
If your bottom sheet is fitted, simply slip the corner pockets onto the ends of the bed and adjust the fitted sheet around the perimeter underneath the mattress pad and mattress. If your bottom sheet is flat, arrange the sheet so that 1 foot of sheet hangs over the edge of the top of your bed. Beginning with the sides of the bed create hospital corners and fold under the mattress and mattress pad. Continue on each side, creasing and folding as you go.

4. Add the Top Sheet
Place the top sheet evenly on the bed, and fold under with hospital corners only at the end of the bed. I like to leave the sides untucked, making it easier to get into the bed, but if it is a guest bed that is only rarely used, or you're a stickler about folding under, you can tuck under the sides as well. Just remember your comforter, quilt, or duvet will likely cover up the little bit of sheet hanging down.

5. Add a Blanket, Comforter, or Duvet
Spread your blanket evenly over the top of the bed, smoothing the edges as you go.

6. Add Pillows
To place pillows under the blanket, fold the top sheet down over the blanket. Place pillows flat on the top sheet at the head of the bed. Fold blanket over the pillows towards the head of the bed, and smooth. Pillows can also be laid upright against the head of the bed. Do what makes the bed have that finished look that you love.

Tips:
1. The more days in a row you make your bed, the faster you'll be at it. Before long, you'll rival the fastest bed makers around.
2. Rotate your pillowcases twice a week, and your bottom sheet once a week. These items get the most wear and tear.
3. Use mattress pads/protectors and pillow protectors to lengthen the time needed between laundering and protect your linens and mattress.

What You Need:
• Valance (optional)
• Bottom Sheet
• Top Sheet
• Comforter, Duvet, Quilt, or Blanket
• Pillowcases
• Mattress Pad/Protector (optional)
• Pillow Protectors (optional)
• Pillows

It's Time To Enjoy the Great Outdoors!

Now that winter is almost officially over, and the sun is beginning to break through the clouds, let's get outdoors and enjoy!

March started off frosty, but it seems set to improve with a promise of a glorious spring. We are being drawn outdoors, whether it is to the park or to our own gardens. This weather totally calls for a picnic and with the Easter Holidays coming up we can definitely afford the break!

If you are heading for the outdoors mid-day then be sure to pack along a generous picnic lunch as the fresh air brings on a hearty appetite! Sandwiches are usually the best choice with a filling of either salami or smoke salmon, along with ready washed vegetables and snacks. You don't want to take along anything that can spill or stain so stay away from foods that require ketchup or sauces!

To prevent grass stains you will definitely need to include a rug or blanket in your picnic box. Homelinen has a couple of great blanketd to suit this purpose. However no need to worry if you do happen to get some green on your clothes! We have the perfect tips to get you clean!

1. Place the picnic rug, stain–side down on an absorbent cloth and sponge the back of the stain by rubbing alcohol, replacing the pad underneath as necessary. Test first for colourfastness. For acetate fabrics, dilute the alcohol with 2 parts water. However, do not use alcohol on wool.
2. Rinse well in cold water.
3. If the stain remains, use an old toothbrush to scrub the stain with non-gel toothpaste (preferably containing baking soda). Let it stand for 2 to 3 minutes. If toothpaste is not available, sponge the stain with white vinegar.
4. Rinse well.
5. If the stain remains, repeat steps 1 through 4 until you’ve removed as much stain as possible.
6. Rub the stain with laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) and let stand for several minutes.
7. Launder with a liquid enzyme detergent.

How Do I Remove Hand Lotion That Has Rubbed Onto My Bedding? But don't worry, with these tips you'll have no problems in removing that lotion from your fabric.

1. Use a dull knife or spoon to remove as much as possible. Then blot any remaining liquid with an absorbent cloth.

2. Sprinkle salt, baking soda, cornstarch, or talcum powder on the stain to absorb any excess oil and let it stand 10 to 15 minutes, and then brush it off.

3. Rub colourless dishwashing liquid into the stain and leave it stand 1 to 2 minutes. Then soak in a sudsy mixture of hot water and dishwashing detergent for up to 30 minutes.

4. Rinse the back of the stain well in hot water. Once again, use a dull knife or spoon to remove any loosened lotion from the fabric.

5. If the stain remains, make a paste of baking soda and water at a ratio of approximately 3 to 1, spread on the stain, wait until it dries, and then brush off.

6. Apply laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) and let stand several minutes. Launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric. For extra heavy stains, replace half the amount of detergent with baking soda.

7. If the stain remains, repeat steps 2 through 6.

Special For Christmas: Elegant Napkin Folds

Why not dress your table for christmas with beautiful napkins which you can purchase at Home Linen. Choose your bed and bedding with care. The correct pillow and duvet can make a difference to the quality of your sleep, and our mattress, pillow and duvet protectors will ensure you have long-term use from your bedding.

Sizing
Single fits bed W90 x L190cm (3’ x 6’3”)
Double fits bed W135 x L190cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
Kingsize fits bed W150 x L200cm (5’ x 6’6”)
Super kingsize fits bed W180 x L200cm (6’ x 6’6”)

Duvet Types
The weight, softness and warmth of a duvet depend on its tog rating and filling. Our duvets come in a range of tog ratings and in natural and synthetic materials, to provide you with the ultimate in comfort.

Choose Your Tog Rating
Tog ratings are based on a duvet's ability to trap warm air. Natural filled duvets have better thermal properties than synthetic, and need less filling to achieve the same level of warmth, so their weight can be deceptive. You just need to remember that the higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet.
Duvets containing feather and/or down are also given a "fill power". This is the volume occupied by the filling and it varies depending on the quality. It's about how well the filling recovers and relates to thermal efficiency. The higher the fill power, the better the duvet:
At Home Linen we have a selection of duvets with different tog ratings:
· 4.5 tog –ideal for summer
· 9.0 tog and 10.5 tog suitable for spring/autumn
· 12.0 tog and 13.5 tog ideal for winter
Our combination duvets offer great flexibility. They consist of two separate duvets – usually a lightweight 4.5 tog for summer and a warmer 9 or 10.5 tog for autumn and spring. During winter, you simply put the two duvets together for a really warm 13.5/15 tog duvet.
We also have a range of metric size duvets in the different tog ratings.

Duvet Fillings
Choose Your Filling
Duvets with natural fillings are durable and naturally breathable. They are also highly resilient and tend to last longer than those with synthetic fillings. However, synthetic duvets are ideal if you suffer from allergies or want to wash your duvet frequently.
Natural-filled duvets could last up to 30 years, whereas the average lifespan of a synthetic duvet is up to 10 years. The number of times a duvet is laundered will also have an impact on its lifespan.

Natural Fillings
Goose down duvets are lighter in weight than duck down, yet offer the same level of warmth. Down duvets in general are lighter then feather, as more filling is required to achieve the same tog rating.
The covers of our natural duvets are of cassette pocket construction, which keeps the filling evenly distributed and prevents cold spots.

Synthetic Fillings
Our polyester hollowfibre duvets are non-allergenic and a good choice if you know you'll need to wash your duvet frequently. Microfibre is the closest in feel and weight to a natural-filled duvet.

Pillows
Pillows have a shorter lifespan than duvets, (because of the weight of our heads and the fact that you lie on top of a pillow and flatten it) and over the years the level of support will deteriorate. Natural filled pillows will keep their shape and level of support for longer than synthetic, but plump all pillows up daily.

Different Shapes & Sizes
Large square or little boudoir pillows give an attractive and inviting layered effect when added to conventional rectangular ones on a bed, as do continental pillows. Choose from:
Boudoir pillows - 30 x 40cm
Square pillows - 66 x 66cm

Pillow Fillings
Natural Fillings
Down and feather pillows mould snugly round the head and shoulders. The more feather there is in a pillow, the firmer it tends to be, and the proportion of down adds softness. All our natural pillows come in downproof casings, but we would always recommend use of a pillow protector to prevent staining and help prolong the life of a pillow.

Synthetic Fillings
These provide the alternative for those allergic to feathers and down. As with duvets, we have a range of different hollowfibre types to choose from, including lightweight fine fibres which provide the closest in feel to a down pillow.

What’s Your Sleep Style?
If you’re not sure what kind of pillow will suit you best, consider how you sleep.
If you sleep on your back, a medium-firm pillow is recommended, while a firm pillow, supporting your neck, is best if you sleep on your side. If you sleep on your stomach, you should go for a soft pillow.

Protection
Protective covers not only help to prolong the life of mattresses and pillows by protecting against soiling and general wear and tear, but create an extra layer of softness and warmth. They can also keep your bedding fresh and revitalize tired mattresses and pillows. Mattress toppers are a means of softening the feel of your mattress and providing extra support.
If you are looking for basic, practical protection, we stock a range of cotton and poly/cotton mattress protectors that either completely enclose the mattress or work like a fitted sheet. We also have a selection of duvet protectors, to protect your quilt.
For anyone who suffers from asthma or other respiratory problems, our breathable anti-allergy protection can be helpful. Our zipped anti-allergy protector is made from a special barrier fabric that allergens cannot penetrate and completely encloses your mattress or pillow. Use our anti-allergy protectors to keep new bedding allergen-free, or as a safeguard against the allergens already present in old bedding.

Purchasing Towels ... GSM Explained

The standard measurement for weight and quality of fabrics is grams per square meter, usually abbreviated as GSM. Towels and bath robes typically vary from 300 to 800 GSM; other fabrics may have values as low as 100 GSM. The same units are used for tissues (18 to 22 GSM is typical) as well as paper towels (35 to 50 GSM is typical).

A towel that weighs less than 400 GSM is likely to be a bit thin, but it depends what you are going to be using it for - if it's to go into your child's swimming bag or if you are purchasing tea towels, then a lightweight towel may be an advantage.

If you are seeking to purchase hand towels or guest towels then you should go for those with a GSM of at least 400.

For bath towels, a higher GSM of 650 is recommended, to provide you with the greater softness and absorbency.
For enduring coziness, go for bath towels that are 100% combed cotton. Cotton fibers naturally attract water, and can hold almost 25 times its weight in the liquid. Combed cotton ensures that the shorter threads have been removed, keeping the towel strong and preventing pilling.

The higher the GSM, the better use you will have from the towel. If you just want the towels for decorative use, to co-ordinate with other towels, then it is not necessary to go for the highest GSM.

At Home Linen we have a large range of high quality towels, most with a GSM between 500 and 650. Our bath robes range from a GSM of 450 to 575GSM.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.homelinen.co.uk/blog/2009/08/standard-measurement-for-weight-and.html' title='Purchasing Towels ... You count both lengthwise (warp) and widthwise (weft) threads. So 100 lengthwise threads woven with 100 widthwise threads produce a thread count of 200. Thread counts can range anywhere from 80 - 1200TC. Low-end thread count fabrics are generally used in settings where the linens are going to have a short life span. High thread count bedding is made to last longer.

The benefits of having a high thread count sheets is that mills are forced to create much finer threads in order to increase the amount of threads in a square inch. Finer threads therefore result in a much smoother and softer fabric. This is the main reason that a higher thread count fabric is more desirable than a low thread count one. Having finer threads also means that the threads are slightly more delicate, so be sure to follow the care instructions when washing your linens. If you're looking for the ultimate in softness, go for a higher thread count. Sleep is no different. So if you have a hard time dozing off, here are some handy hints and tips to help you fall sound asleep:

Keep regular hours and get into a regular sleeping pattern by going to bed at the same time every night.

Create a restful sleeping environment by making sure that the room temperature and lighting is set just right.

Make sure that your bedding is suited to match your needs. Choosing the correct type of pillow and duvet could mean the end to those sleepless nights.

Take more exercise to relieve the day’s stresses and strains.

Cut down on stimulants such as the caffeine in coffee and tea.

Don’t overindulge in food, alcohol or smoking before bedtime as this will disrupt your sleep.

Remove any worries from your mind before you go to sleep by making a list of things to do for the following day. It is important that you clear your mind from any thought before you attempt to go to sleep.

Try to relax before going to bed and wind down gradually by taking a hot bath or listening to music.

If you can’t sleep, don’t worry! Get up and do something relaxing, like reading a book.

Throw your duvet back for twenty minutes every morning to allow the moisture on your bed to evaporate.

Sweet dreams!

Let's Go Outdoors

It’s the time of year when the great outdoors beckons to us. The garden that lost its colour and vitality through the long winter months is now as a burst of sunshine, calling all those inside to come out and bask in its glory. When surrounded by nature our spirits are transformed, as though any negativity within us has been lifted together with those grey clouds.

Let’s try and raise those spirits further yet by spending as much time in the sunshine with those whom we love and care about. A great way to make the most the season’s good weather and to really appreciate all the work that we put in to making our gardens the works of art that they are is to bring our meals outside. Meals that throughout the long winter months were consumed at the kitchen table can easily be enjoyed in the garden.

Meal times are bonding times; the interaction that we get from sharing a meal, conversing and communicating would save many marriages and relationships. When we sit and eat around a table, we create a bond, a circle of intimacy, a circle of eye contact and a harmony of heartbeats that understands and recognizes each other. When the setting is that such as our blooming garden, whether it be in the dazzling sunshine or the gathering dusk, there is an extra ingredient. Let’s benefit from this gift of nature and treat ourselves and our loved ones. This is an opportune time to re-embark on a journey of enjoying each others company, knowing where our husbands, partners, children’s lives are at. Knowing what they are up to, what they are thinking and feeling.

Whether we bring out a lovingly prepared home cooked meal, or make an onsite barbeque, the benefits are instantaneous. Bedeck the outdoor furniture with the traditional checkered or floral designs that are a comfort for all and bask in the sunshine whilst re-igniting the connection with your loved ones.

Take A Coffee Break...

A simple tablecloth seemingly unnoticed sitting silently on the table. Its effect and influence is far reaching. It represents the family unit as it was and should be, a family that unites and celebrates, laughs and cries around the kitchen table, argues and applauds.

This piece of cloth, be it cotton, damask or lace, is bound in our lives, bound to our experiences. The concept of TV diners and placemat eating, has rendered a void larger and deeper than is perceived. The traditional ritual of dining together, the ordinary setting of the table, laying out the cutlery, selecting the plates, the seating arrangements, all these small gestures are inexplicably linked to the infrastructure of the home.

The interaction that we get from sharing a meal conversing and communicating would save many marriages and relationships. Wonderful sensations, excitement, the knowledge that we were in this colourful dream, about to unfold.
As tablecloths were taken out of the cupboard, layed out and then dismissed as not suitable, the decision was not made until the last one had been judged and decided wanting. The same cloth that had been the first would go back on again, and after all was said and done that was the perfect cloth. The pattern was very distinct, it was all over lace, with crocheted hearts . I loved running my fingers along the bumpy pattern outlining the shapes .
How we peeked through the banister and watched the dining room transformed, from shabby to majestic for every festive occasions. Crockery or really parts of sets that had mostly disappeared were spread out but the few remaining pieces were still treated with reverence. Once that cloth had been laid out we knew fun was in store.
Here at http://www.homelinen.co.uk/ we know what works and we have amazing staff who can assist you.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SIZE CLOTH I NEED?

Its very simple just lay a tape measure over the surface of the table and add aprox 25 cm to each end to achieve the correct drape that is the size you require. If your table is 2.00 meters long you would purchase aprox 2.50 meters. You do exactly the same to the width measure the width and then add aprox 25 cm to each side. The most important issue is to have the cloth that suits you best so if it is a few centimetres short it is can still work. Keep in mind that if a cloth is too wide then those that sit around will have lots of cloth on their laps and that may not be so comfortable. Remember either till the floor or 20-25cm drape.

OVAL OR OBLONG TABLECLOTH??

MY TABLE IS OVAL, CAN I BUY AN OBLONG TABLECLOTH?

Even though it is not ideal you can buy an oblong tablecloth for an oval table, but you must be careful that the size is not longer than 18 cm on either side. This is because the corners will touch the floor and that can be dangerous and uncomfortable for those sitting on the sides.(and with oval tables you tend to have people sitting along the corners) Keep one thing in mind, you can not use an oval tablecloth on an oblong table, since the corners of the table will be uncovered.

I HAVE A SMALL BUDGET,SO HOW DO I CREATE A FESTIVE DINING TABLE?

If you want to transform your room and don’t want to spend a lot then today's home fashion is ideal for you. Purchase a runner in gold, silver, aubergine or red colours and put that in the centre of your table. Then experiment with coordinating placemats and contrasting napkins and you can also add a mantle runner so the fabrics soften the area and give it freshness.Your home will instantly look redecorated and so festive!

I WANT TO USE A CLOTH BUT I AM HAVING FRIENDS OVER AND HATE IRONING?

I have a wonderful solution for you here at http://www.homelinen.co.uk/ . I understand busy schedules. I run a busy household with kids, heavy work, commitments and lots of entertaining. The secret is easy care tablecloths. Gone are the notions that the tablecloths need be shiny and synthetic looking.

We have a selection of table linen that are “wash and wear” that a connoisseur would have a hard time differentiating, www.homelinen.co.uk/homelinen/Tablecloths/Swiss-Easy-Care/ whether it is cotton or linen. The Swiss range of cloths are just that, it is produced in Switzerland and has their uncompromising standards . The basic cloth that is easy on the pocket and easy to care for would be all of our plain dyed cloths with scalloped edges or straight hemmed.
So for those of you that want to buy British we have Nottingham Cluny lace that is manufactured in the uk. For those who like the rustic country patterns of simplistic style I recommend the Aubergue checks http://www.homelinen.co.uk/homelinen/Tablecloths/Country-Style.The range also has a variety of accessories pot mitts oven gloves seat pads aprons etc. For those discerning people who understand and appreciate a genuine classic piece and can only have cotton damask or pure linen I recommend www.homelinen.co.uk/homelinen/Tablecloths/Thomas-Ferguson-Irish-Linen/

TIPS!

Always wash out stains with cold water never use hot directly. If you have soda water at hand try it always use that first on the stains it will neutralize the stain. If you fold your tablecloth before placing it in the washing machine, ironing will be that much easier.
For easiest ironing take the items out of the dryer half way so they are a little damp and iron them on the reverse hey presto ! Its done!

Gusty winds and frosty mornings autumn winter. The wonderful cycle of the year that I love so much, Vivaldi’s four seasons encapsulates it perfectly with his musical crescendo and speeding tempos.Spring the rebirth of the world, our windows open and beckon life to start its merry tune. All flowers blossoming, suns rays slowly hesitantly showing between clouds that ride the sky.The summer brings with it anticipation of fresh breezes, sticky humid days, memories of warm hazy evenings of slow sunsets. Autumn trees baring their branches, leaves; slowly hitting the ground, scarf's being pulled out hidden away coats and jackets brought down.

Walking the crisp air surrounding me, pushing the mountains of leaves, everything looks different.Shorter days longer nights the winter cold brings with it feelings of hibernation, nesting staying home, close to familiar things. Snuggled up and cosy, warmed by home and hearth. Keeping these fuzzy memories of hot soup and delicious toasted sandwiches, under the thick feathered quilt. Fluffy quilts are so forgiving, they allow you to forget worries or feeling sad they just encase and embrace you.

At home linen http://www.homelinen.co.uk/ understand your requirements; we understand the needs of people. We can respond to different lifestyles. We test and try our products.
When you share a double, king size or super king size quilt the key requirement is that both people should get adequate comfort. A feather quilt can control two body temperatures, it has the ability to contour the shape and allow the body to breathe, through the down so you wake feeling refreshed and at ease.

WHAT IS TOG RATING?

The higher the tog rating the warmer, the quilt. In the summer months you would find a 4.5 tog feather quilt sufficient for those occasioning light chills or just simple cozy lie inns. As the temperatures drop the tog rating should rise to suit.In the spring a 9 tog would work, it supplies efficient warmth without stifling. You can even buy a quilt made up of two parts "all seasons" that can be separated and used in the summer(4.5 tog)and in the spring the 9 tog and then in the winter both combined to create the 13.5 tog rating Still overwhelmingly popular is 13.5 tog its advantages are its possible all year round use. There are those that do not have adequate heating and truly freeze in the winter for them I recommend a 15 tog quilt that is for those that simply can’t get warm enough. The quilt was one of the serious investments families made that lasted throughout their lives.

IS WEIGHT AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN A QUILT?

The duvets of yesteryear were so heavy and casings weighed so much, that if it slipped at night the easier option would be to "unite on the floor." Casings have improved massively. Jacquard cotton casing with pocketed construction with a variety of edges gives us versatility. There are still those who prefer a heavy quilt but then they purchase duck feather as that is the heaviest not necessarily the best. Experience has taught us, weight is not the deciding factor on warmth, but the quality of the feather. Instead they are lighter but they provide superior warmth.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOS E DOWN AND DUCK?

At http://www.homelinen.co.uk/ we know that Geese have 4 types of feathers but the down has all the insulating abilities we need for a high quality duvet. The feathers from foul that live in seriously cold areas, like those in Hungary or Poland or better yet from Siberia, are the best. The temperatures are so low in those regions that the foul need to be insulated well to stay alive and be light enough to give them mobility. These quality feathers appear with no central spine as do the duck feathers. The duck feathers provide fullness, and are easy to come by, but do not have the warmth and insulating capabilities of the goose down from colder areas. Duck down also exists and is superior to duck feather as it is finer than the duck feather. The GOOSE DOWN feather is plucked beneath the outer layer feather giving bounce and loftiness with its concentrated benefits.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TYPE OF FEATHER IS INSIDE A QUILT?

When a products mentions a quilt with the words goose feather and down you know that there is more goose feather than down. Whichever feather is mentioned first that is the majority feather in that quilt, i.e. there is more goose than down. If it says duck feather and down you know that there is more duck than feather. If it says duck down and feather than you know there is more duck down than feather. These feather quilts can last up to thirty years. As we deal with the challenges of life what better way to meet the seasons than under a good cozy duvet/quilt from http://www.homelinen.co.uk/ anticipation of the four seasons.

p.s. the best way to store a feather quilt Use a breathable bag to prevent mildew and avoid plastic ones that trap moisture and do not offer any breath abilityits a myth that feather duvets can’t be washed place in a large drum with minimum spins and lay out to dry and your quilt will be like new.

My mischievous little one has done it once again! This time she got an ink stain on her lovely new bed linen. How do I get rid of that easily?

Ink stains seems to be fairly common and could really get you hot under the collar. All you have to do, though, is to apply hairspray which dissolves the stain. Spray the stain with hairspray and then blot it with a paper towel, but dont rub it. Keep doing this till the stain disappears and don't forget to hold a paper under the bed linen so that the stain doesn't go into another sheet.

My kitchen towels are always getting stained one way or another. How do I ensure that they always look clean and smell fresh?

Oh thats fairly easy to take care of! With just three simple steps you can ensure that your towels are kept clean and fresh.

First step: Lay your towel flat on a counter and sprinkle lemon juice across the stains.

Second step: Combine some baking soda and a little water to make a paste. Then apply the paste to the stains and leave for a few minutes.

Thire step: Using an old toothbrush scrub the stained area and then rinse. For those stubborn stains repeat the first and second step. Launder as usual.

GOOD LUCK!!!

AUTUMN IS IN THE AIR...

It's that time of year again when all around us the leaves transform themselves into a fantastic display of vibrant colour. How Can I Remove The Stains So That The Blankets Can Have That New Look Once Again?
Baby Formula always seems to find its way onto baby's blankets and clothes. With these simple tips you'll have no problem restoring your blankets.
1. For fresh stains, soak and agitate the fabric thoroughly in cold water. For dried stains, soak fabric in a sudsy mixture of cold water and liquid enzyme detergent up to 30 minutes, until the stain is loosened. 2. Rinse well. If the stain remains, rub a liquid enzyme detergent into the stain and let stand several minutes.
3. Launder according to instructions on the blanket.
4. If the stain still remains, make a paste of unseasoned meat tenderiser and water, at a ratio of approximately 3 to 1, and rub onto the stain.5. Let the paste dry, then brush it off and rinse the fabric well. If meat tenderiser is not available, soak the stain in enzyme detergent and cold water mixture for up to 30 minutes.6. Apply a laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) and launder again. On white fabrics, bleach any remaining stain by blotting with lemon juice and setting it to dry in the sunlight.

Super Glue - A Super Tool that can be a Super Headache

Many of us use the days in between finishing work and hopping-off on our long-awaited holiday to fix up all the bits and pieces around the house that have been calling out for our attention since December. Super glue is my secret weapon, I use it to fix almost everything from chipped vases and cracked tiles to broken chairs and furnishings.

Super glue is totally amazing, until you get some on your clothing or your favorite tablecloth, then it can be a super headache. Super glue bonds almost instantly so even if you act fast, chances are, the glue will have dried onto your fabric before you’ve had a chance to remove it. If super glue gets onto fabric try these tips for removal:

What You Will Need:
Folded square of paper towel or ear-bud
Acetone-based nail polish remover
Toothbrush
Very fine sand paper or emery board
Liquid laundry detergent
Washing machine
Lighter fluid (optional)

Removing the Glue:
Ensure that the glue is dry before attempting to remove.
Wet the paper towel square or ear-bud with acetone-based nail polish remover (make sure the nail polish remover is acetone-based or this will not work).
Test the fabric in a small, inconspicuous area to make sure the nail polish remover will not damage or discolor the material.
Dab the glue spot with the towel or ear-bud soaked with the nail polish remover, letting the towel or ear-bud sit on the glue for a minute or two.
Briskly rub the spot with the toothbrush until some glue flakes off.
Depending upon the amount of glue on the fabric, steps 4 and 5 may have to be repeated as super glue will come off in layers.
If the glue has soaked through to the opposite side of the fabric, you may have to repeat steps 4 and 5 for both sides of the material.
After repeating the dab and scrub procedure several times, if the spot remains, gently rub the spot with the very fine sand paper or emery board. Be careful not to rub too vigorously or you may damage or tear the fabric.
Pour a couple of drops of laundry detergent directly onto the area where the glue residue was and rub the detergent into the fabric using your thumb and forefinger.
Wash the fabric or garment in your washing machine as per the directions on the label.
When the wash cycle has finished, check the fabric carefully for any remaining stain. If the stain remains, DO NOT place it in the dryer, as the heat from the dryer will set the stain and it will be virtually impossible to remove.

I’m what you call a donut lover, and this passion for jam has passed on to my kids.. We've made a tradition that on 'special days' donuts are served for dessert, which usually means that we're left with a bunch of sticky fingers and sparkling eyes..

You can't expect kids to stay clean when eating a donut with jam oozing out of it, but I've learnt not to sweat over it, and have developed a method of getting rid of of the jam stains that have become part and parcel of our birthday parties..

For fresh stains on fabric:
1. Treat the stain as soon as possible. Use a dull knife or spoon to remove as much as possible. If you cannot treat the stain immediately, sprinkle it with salt.
2. Rinse any remaining stain with cold water.
3. Rub liquid laundry detergent into the stain. Do not use a bar or natural soap of any kind on the fabric, or the stain will set.
4. Let stand several minutes, then rinse the back of the stain well in hot water, letting the water pass quickly through the fabric.
5. If the stain remains, stretch the stained fabric, stain side down over the basin. Boil three or more cups of water in a pot or tea kettle and carefully pour over the stain from a height of 1 to 2 feet. (This may require two people: one to hold the fabric taut and the other to pour the water.) The procedure will force the stain through the fabric. If you’re the only one on stain duty, run the faucet water as hot as possible and carefully hold the stain under it.
6. If the stain remains, apply a laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) and launder with liquid enzyme detergent.
7. If the stain remains, sponge the stain with a light bleach solution, such as equal parts white vinegar and water. Rinse well and let dry in sunlight. Repeat as needed until no more stain can be removed.
8. Apply laundry pre-soak and re-launder with enzyme detergent.
9. If the stain remains, rub enzyme detergent into the stain and soak in water up to one hour or until the stain is removed. Rinse well and launder.

For dried stains on fabric:
1. Make a paste of borax and water (at a ratio of approximately 3 to 1) and spread onto the stain.
2. Let stand 15 minutes, then rinse. If borax is not available, rub glycerine into the stain and let stand for 1 hour. Rinse.
3. See steps 3 through 9 for fresh stains, above.

Good luck & Enjoy!

Caring For Your Pillows...

I recently purchased some expensive microfibre pillows to replace the ones we have been using for the past few years. How do I care for my pillows to ensure that we have the best possible use from them?

With proper care pillows should last you for quite a few years. Here are some tips to ensure that they give you the maximum number of cosy nights possible.

Pillow Care & Cleaning
*Use a Pillow Protector: Pillows should be covered with pillow protectors in addition to decorative pillowcases. These protectors, which often have a zipper closure, provide you an additional layer between the pillow and a pillowcase.
*Washing: If the pillow you have selected is machine washable (check the care label), please follow these easy steps:
1. Wash with a mild detergent on a warm water/gentle setting
2. After the wash cycle is complete, rinse the pillow 2 additional times (to rid the pillow of any soap that may still be in the pillow. Then spin the pillow two additional times (to rid the pillow of excess water.)
3. Dry the pillow completely on a low heat setting. For pillows with internal chambers, you may need to dry the pillow for four to six hours. Between cycles, remove the pillow and hand fluff. Note that pillows may still be damp inside even when they feel dry to the touch. Any lumps or clumps of fill indicates dampness; continue to dry until you are sure there is no moisture left in your pillow.
4. Between washings, the pillow can be re-fluffed on an air fluff setting in the dryer. Include a couple of clean tennis balls and a fabric softener sheet for extra fluff and a fresh smell.

Storage
When pillows are not in use, store them in breathable bags. Storing pillows in plastic bags will trap moisture in, which may cause the pillows to mildew or the fill to decompose.

Can I Get Rid of This Nail Polish Stain?

Who doesn't love a good manicure? If you're like me then you may find yourself painting your nails in the strangest places ... be it in the house or out, on your bed or at the steering wheel. Worst than the nails smudging, is the nail polish spilling; and if this happens when you're doing the manicure on your bed or at the dining room table then this could lead to a veritable nightmare! How on earth are you going to get rid of that pale pink stain, which looks so hot on your nails but mighty ugly on the once white tablecloth. No fear! Riki's Tips provides the perfect solution for removing this extra stress from your life....

1. Place the bed linen, towel or tablecloth, over an absorbent cloth and blot with an acetone nail polish remover. Straight acetone can also be use; it is stronger and may work faster than nail polish remover. For either method, test first for colourfastness. If colour is affected, substitute white vinegar for the nail polish remover. Apply slowly and blot continuously. Replace the cloth as it becomes saturated.

2. Rinse well.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have removed as much stain as possible.

4. Apply a laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) and let stand several minutes.

5. Launder according to instructions on label.

6. Let fabric dry in the sun after each washing, for added bleaching. For white or colourfast materials, try blotting the stain with a solution of equal parts white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide and water, then setting fabric in sunlight. Keep stain moist with solution until the stain is removed. If that doesn't work, launder with a bleach that is safe for the fabric. Test first for colourfastness. If all else fails check out Home Linen's latest designs where you are sure to find a suitable replacement. And if the stain does come off .... you can still treat yourself to a fabulous tablecloth or a luxurious new bedroom set from the vast range available at Home Linen.
